Development of B4C-CaB6 Ceramic Compsites Toughened with TiB2 Agglomerates
B4C, which is the hardest known material after diamond and cubic boron nitride, has many applications due to its high hardness, high wear resistance, high temperature resistance and neutron absorption. Due to its advanced properties, B4C is widely used as abrasive, nozzle, ballistic protection, neutron shield and neutron detector. The most critical disadvantage of B4C is its low sinterability and low fracture toughness even at high relative densities. Various additives such as Al2O3, SiC, C are used to increase sinterability and increase fracture toughness. In this master's study, CaB6 and TiB2 reinforced ceramic composite with B4C matrix will be developed and its abrasive properties will be investigated.
