Investigation, Design and Characterization of Luminescence Properties of Rare Earth Elements on Glass-Ceramic Coatings

Supervisor: Yasin Bozkurt Yılmaz, Assoc Prof. Dr. Buğra Çiçek

Vitreous porcelain enamels are used in many decorative products in our daily life. The fact that they have a particularly glossy surface and a wide variety of colour options gives the products an attractive and authentic appearance. In addition, its resistance to impact provides a significant advantage against falling or breaking that may occur due to any other reason. This work was done to develop luminescence centers in these glass-ceramic systems to enhance this impressive appearance. Thus, decorative products that emit light with their bright and impressive color were created. These luminescence centers were created thanks to luminescence pigments added to porcelain enamel. Luminescent pigments are produced by using electronic transitions of rare earth ions trapped in some glass-ceramic systems containing oxides such as SrO, Al2O3, MgO, SiO2, CaO, BaO. These glass-ceramic systems play an important role in preventing the degradation of the luminescent centers trapped in the enamel against 800-860 °C firing conditions, thanks to its high melting temperature [1].
