Development of B4C-matrix Ceramic Composite Systems for Lightweight Defence/Aerospace
Applications

Advisor: Asst. Prof. Dr. Buğra Çiçek
Ceramic-matrix composites (CMC) can be used under various conditions which necessitate high
hardness, low density, high thermal/chemical resistance and semiconducting capability. Different
combinations of oxide and non-oxide ceramic materials were used to develop CMC systems to
provide specific characteristics for designated missions[1]. B4C tend to show ultra-high hardness,
low density and high wear resistance which makes it ideal for armor applications and cutting tools
[2]. B4C-matrix ceramic composite systems can offer improved properties compared to monolithic
B4C such as; improved fracture toughness, higher strength and improved amorphization behaviour
under impact or load. The aim of this study is to develop lightweight B4C-matrix ceramic composite
systems via hot pressing or reaction sintering methods for lightweight armor and aerospace
applications.
